Worcester Polytechnic Institute,
Campus Quad & Wedge Triangle
Worcester, MA
Following the addition of WPI’s 500-space parking garage and elevated athletic fields in 2014, the university sought to reorient its campus around a renewed center of gravity. The redesign of the Campus Quad and Wedge Terrace created a vibrant community hub for students and faculty.
Revitalizing the Heart of Campus
Samiotes provided civil engineering and environmental permitting services for 2.75 acres of open space improvements, transforming the Quad into an active gathering space and event venue. The work included realigning circulation paths, creating placemaking nodes, improving drainage, and designing a new dining terrace at the Wedge. Key solutions included:
-
A subsurface underdrain system to mitigate standing water and ensure the lawn’s usability for major events like graduation
-
Stormwater infrastructure designed to meet Worcester’s storm event requirements
-
Soil erosion and sediment controls adapted to site conditions
-
Vehicular layouts and material selections that balanced durability with pedestrian-focused design
