Saugus Middle High School
Saugus, MA
Located along Route 1 and near the Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site, the new Saugus Middle High School brings together grades 6–12 in a unified, forward-looking facility. Designed as part of a town-wide educational master plan, the 271,000-sf campus supports a STEM-focused curriculum in bright, flexible spaces that include learning pods, murals celebrating Saugus’ industrial roots, a 750-seat auditorium, a gymnasium, and a café-style commons. With a LEED Platinum® certification — the first awarded to an MSBA-funded school — the building exemplifies sustainability and educational innovation.
Designing for Saugus: STEM, Sustainability and Community
Samiotes provided civil engineering, land surveying, and environmental permitting throughout the project, helping the team overcome significant site complexity and realize a high-performance school. Highlights include:
-
Support through MEPA filing, Notice of Intent (NOI) permitting, MASS DOT Access and extensive coordination to address wetlands, dense neighborhood boundaries, and adjacent businesses
-
Relocation of undocumented utilities, including an active sewer line across Route 1, while the existing school remained fully operational
-
Design and integration of three 30,000-gallon underground cisterns to harvest and reuse water, supporting the building’s 45% reduction in annual water use
-
Placement of Bio-Swales throughout parking areas to manage runoff and reduce heat island effects
Samiotes’ expertise helped deliver a transformative educational campus that sets a new standard for sustainability, efficiency, and community resilience.
