Phillips Academy Snyder Center
Andover, MA
This environmentally sustainable athletics center, designed for Phillips Academy Andover, is nestled into an extremely sloped site adjacent to the existing Phelps Stadium Turf football field. The Snyder Center is a 97,900-sf facility which includes a four-lane 200-meter indoor track with convertible infield configurations for both baseball and tennis; an all-weather practice space for field sports; Four basketball courts; Twelve squash courts (including a glass exhibition performance court with spectator seating); a multipurpose room for fencing, dance, and fitness classes; locker rooms, meeting spaces and classrooms. The project obtained LEED Platinum certification and an AIA New England Design Award in 2019.
Challenges of the site included significant slopes on the site due to setting the building into a hill-side, while preserving the recently installed turf field and football stadium seating, and the tight space with active athletic programs surrounding the building site. The site features numerous Low Impact Development (LID) Stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs) that combines hydrologically-functional site design with pollution prevention measures that compensate for the land development impacts on hydrology and water quality. The site features cascading rain gardens that step down alongside the existing grades, grassed channels adjacent to existing post-tension tennis courts, and other BMP's. The stormwater BMP's are also being utilized as constructed learning elements for Phillips Academy is environmental science students.
