Cambridge Fire Headquarters

Cambridge, MA

Located in the heart of Cambridge adjacent to Harvard University, the historic Fire Headquarters—originally constructed in 1934—is underwent a comprehensive restoration and modernization to meet the demands of a 21st-century emergency response facility. The project preserves the building’s iconic brick exterior while transforming the interior to support current operational standards and long-term sustainability goals.

Modernizing Critical Infrastructure Within a Historic Framework

Samiotes provided civil engineering, land surveying, and environmental permitting services for both the renovation of the headquarters and the development of temporary facilities at Cambridge Hospital—ensuring uninterrupted emergency operations throughout construction.

Working within a dense urban environment and a historically sensitive site, the project required careful coordination of access, infrastructure, and resiliency systems to meet the City of Cambridge’s Net Zero goals.

Key contributions included:

  • Designing site circulation to support modern apparatus access, egress, and operational efficiency

  • Coordinating grading, utilities, and stormwater management within a constrained urban footprint

  • Integrating accessibility improvements to meet current ADA standards

  • Supporting resiliency and mitigation strategies aligned with the City’s long-term climate goals

  • Assisting in the planning and implementation of temporary facilities to maintain continuous service off-site within Cambridge Hospital’s parking lot

The project’s sustainable upgrades—including solar panels, high-efficiency systems, and geothermal wells—position the facility to align with Cambridge’s Net Zero roadmap, targeting carbon-neutral buildings by 2050.

By balancing preservation, performance, and public safety, Samiotes helped extend the life of a critical civic asset while preparing it for the future.
